Rock City Coffee Roasters began as a bookstore cafe in Rockland, Maine, and since 2018 it has been owned by its employees as a worker cooperative.

The co-op

Per Daily Coffee News (April 2018), the remaining owner, Susanne Ward, converted the company to a worker-owned cooperative. 17 of its 30 employees took part. A co-owner had died in 2010.

The roastery

Per Mainebiz (February 2025), the roastery moved from Rockland to a 2,250 square foot warehouse in Rockport that the co-op bought to build equity, up from 1,200 square feet before. The company describes its coffee as specialty-grade, organic, and ethically sourced, and offers free weekly local delivery. Certification labels were not visible on its product listings, so none is claimed here.
